LINK internships are 3 week internships that AHS Juniors have to complete in order to graduate. The interesting thing about these is that we have to complete a project while we are interning at the place we chose.
Comp-U-Tech is a Farmington computer repair shop and custom builders that has been open since 1993. in 1999 they where officially endorsed by Intel to advertise and sell their products. On a day to day basis, I occasionally disassembled old computers for parts, and I also occasionally built custom ordered computers for customers. Since, they don't get that much business a lot of the day was spent slacking off, in fact, they have a server for a certain game in there just so the employees have something to do when business is slow.
My Project
For my project, my mentor's boss needed a computer upgrade. I went ahead and built it for him. He chose to use an Intel Core i5 13th gen, a NVIDIA RTX 3050, 32 gigabytes of RAM, and a 1 terabyte SSD.
Reflection
Coming into my internship with Savannah and Comp-U-Tech, I already knew how to build a computer from the ground up. Five years ago, I gathered computer components, such as an intel core i5 6600k processor, an AMD Radeon RX 570 graphics card, and all the other things needed to build a computer. I still use it to this day, although more current Windows updates that will not install, and my CPU will not be able to access the internet in the next couple of years, so it is about time for an upgrade. The most important thing I learned during my internship is how to build my skills in building a computer, such as how to properly install a graphics card, how to manage cables, and how to install the proper drivers for your computer. I found the best way to kill time during slow work days while still learning about computers is to disassemble old prebuilt computers for parts. Which gave me a better understanding of how to navigate around a computer case. I feel like Comp-U-Tech is a great place for future LINK students to learn about computer hardware because it is not too far away, and they have all you need to learn. Working at Comp-U-Tech, I feel like only if it was a little busier, it would definitely be what I want to do for a living.
